By Jim Dower: 2016 super heavyweight Olympic bronze medal winner Filip Hrgovic (3-0, 3 KOs) will be fighting Ireland’s Sean Turner (12-1, 8 KOs) this Saturday night in a scheduled 8-round fight on the undercard of the Callum Smith vs. Juergen Braehmer card at the Arena Nurnberger in Nuremberg, Germany.

Hrgovic, 25, will be looking to add another knockout win to his resume to keep his mini-streak going since he turned pro in September 2017.

The 6’6” Hrgovic has looked good thus far in beating the lower level opposition he’s been put in with. His wins have come against Tom Little, Pavel Sour and Raphael Zumbano Love. It’s still too early to tell whether Hrgovic will pan out. Hrgovic has the size to be one of the best heavyweights in the division. but he might not have quite enough punching power.

It’s Hrgovic’s bad luck that he’s turning pro at a time where the division is being ruled by giant heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. Both of those fighters have the same size as Hrgovic, but they’re much better punchers than him. Hrgovic can make a lot of money if he can get a title shot against Joshua. If things don’t work out for Hrgovic with his career, he can still make good money if he can challenge IBF/WBA heavyweight champion Joshua while he’s still on top of the division.

In Hrgovic’s last fight, he landed a lot of shots on the tough as nails Tim Little before stopping him in the 4th round last January. The fight was surprisingly competitive. The 30-year-old Little was as tough as nails and connected with some big punches that would have hurt a lesser heavyweight. Hrgovic was able to take the occasional bombs that Little was nailing him with. That was an exciting fight from start to finish. Both guys were throwing bombs. Little didn’t show up to roll over for Hrgovic. He made sure the 25-year-old Croatian earned his money in that fight.

Callum Smith and Juergen Braehmer will square off in the main event this Saturday in fighting in the semifinals of the World Boxing Super Series tournament. The winner of the fight will meet George Groves in the finals on June 2.
