By Raj Parmar: With the rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) and Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) a week away, both fighters are aiming to settle any questions left unanswered from the first fight. While many feel Maidana was close to pulling off the historic upset, Floyd himself feels he dominated Maidana handily back in May.

“I think nine rounds to three rounds is a shutout. Just look at the fight. The fight is not close,” Floyd stated on a recent media conference call, “But he came out, he won the first round, I won the second round, he won the third and the fourth, and from the fifth on he lost every round.”

Official scorecards for the first fight were 117-111, 116-112 and 114-114 in Mayweather’s favour, however Maidana did better than many fans expected and earned praise for his determined effort in trying to dethrone the pound for pound king. Mayweather attributed Maidana’s effectiveness in the fight to the use of dirty tactics which was encouraged by Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia.

“He’s (Garcia) supposed to be one of the best trainers in the sport of boxing, but I think it’s totally disrespectful to the sport of boxing for a trainer to be telling the guy to be dirty,” Floyd explained, “If you guys notice, I got tackled, the guy tried to knee me, I got a head butt, and there were rabbit punches, and there were low blows, and the list goes on and on.”

Accusations from each camp about dirty fighting have been prevalent during the build up to the rematch. Team Maidana feels Floyd uses his elbows throughout the fight to push off his opponents while Floyd feels Marcos resembles more of a MMA fighter than a boxer. With each fighter eager to prove who is the better man at any cost next week, referee Kenny Bayless will no doubt be keeping a close watch on both men to ensure any roughhouse tactics are kept to a minimum.
