froch0002By Scott Gilfoid: Last night, the British Boxing Board of Control has named IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) the BBBofC Boxer of the year for his two wins over George Groves. The victory for the 37-year-old Froch was his third consecutive time in winning the BBBiofC boxer of the year.

Froch has kind of won the award by default for the last several years because no one else in British boxing has done much in the last three years. David Haye hasn’t been fighting, David Price’s career is in quicksand, Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury has been pulling out of fights.

It kind of left Froch all alone to win the award once again without any competition.

Beating Groves twice really wasn’t that big of a deal because Groves had never fought anyone good before in order for boxing fans to see what he was made of. He went into the fight without the experience necessary for boxing fans to know whether Groves deserved to be in the same ring with Froch. As it turns out, Groves didn’t belong in there with Froch and got drilled out in two fights.

Froch hasn’t picked up what you can call a solid since he defeated Lucian Bute in 2012. I don’t rate Froch’s win over Mikkel Kessler as a solid win last year because Kessler stood on the outside for the first 6 rounds like he didn’t want to even fight.

Kessler just stood there giving up rounds, and acting like he was afraid to get past Froch’s limp jab. When Kessler finally did start actually fighting in the 7th, he dominated the last 6 rounds of the fight. It just kind of showed you that Kessler would have beaten Froch if he’d actually had the interest in fighting.

Froch will be fighting on January 31st against a still to be determined opponent. It could be anyone that steps inside the ring with Froch. He wants Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but it seems like Kessler is someone that Froch wants to fight again. Froch has been mentioning Kessler a lot as of late. I’m not sure how you can sell a Froch-Kessler third fight after the way that Kessler fought the last time they faced each other.
