Schaefer says Mayweather-Maidana gloves issue will be worked out

may27By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that the gloves issue, which temporarily had today’s Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana fight in doubt, will be worked out between the two fighters. At issue was the padding around Maidana’s 8 ounce Everlast MX gloves. The gloves weighed the normal 8 ounces, but the distribution of padding was thin around the knuckle area of the gloves. It’s unclear why the inspection of the gloves didn’t take place earlier so that it wouldn’t have put the fight in jeopardy.

Schaefer did acknowledge that the gloves that Maidana was planning to use had very little padding around the knuckle area. Schaefer said that he wasn’t sure if the gloves had come that way or if some of the people handling the gloves had moved the passing around by the time he took a look at the gloves.

“They’re still working on it, but everything will be worked out,” Schaefer said via RingTV. “Now it’s just a matter of which gloves they’re going to use. I am absolutely confident that it will be worked out. All of the gloves were eight ounce gloves. But when you have gloves, to make them eight ounces, that’s easy. The question is where’s the weight distributed.”

Schaefer went on to say that in the future they’ll go over the type of gloves used in the contract so that they don’t have disagreements about them later on down the line like what we’re seeing here.

The glove issue could potentially hurt pay-per-view sales for tonight’s fight because it’s got a lot of fans wondering whether the Mayweather-Maidana fight will take place. Golden Boy Promotions doesn’t need something like this to happen just before the start of the fight. With some fans now upset with Maidana about the gloves, they might be less than excited about paying to see the fight. If some fans feel that Maidana was trying to gain an advantage over Mayweather with gloves with less padding around the knuckles, they might be turned off towards the fight. That’s why the type of gloves used by both fighters should have been agreed upon much earlier so as to avoid all of this last second arguments.

Mayweather will be using Grant gloves, which have plenty of padding around the knuckle area of the gloves.
