Khan to try and book his $10 million Mayweather payday this Saturday

khan56By Scott Gilfoid: Amir “King” Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) will be in the ring this Saturday night in his quest to get a $10 million payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for later this year in September. To get this big payday fight, Khan has to beat Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) and do it in such a manner that he impresses the fans and most of all he impresses Mayweather. It’s Mayweather who Khan has to sell himself to with his performance against Collazo.

Golden Boy Promotions has the ideal opponent for him to fight in 33-year-old Collazo instead of someone that he’d be in grave danger against the likes of Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman. But in fighting Collazo, who was recently made to look good by being matched against Victor Ortiz, Khan has a better than average chance of winning the fight instead of getting knocked out.

If Khan can’t beat Collazo then this will no doubt close the chapter of Khan talking about him getting the Mayweather fight. Sure, Khan can yap all he wants about him wanting a fight against Mayweather, but the fact is if he loses to Collazo this Saturday night then it’s over for Khan. Mayweather isn’t young enough for Golden Boy Promotions to trot out little 5’5″ Carlos Molina and Julio Diaz and whoever else they find to try and rebuild Khan.

“I want millions of people to see that it is me who should have been in there fighting Mayweather this weekend,” Khan said to the Dailymail.co.uk. “I want to show them what an exciting, fast, explosive boxer Amir Khan is. I intend to go out there and steal the show.”

Gee, this sounds like Khan is going to go out and walk into one of Collazo’s right hooks the same way that Victor Ortiz recently did last January. You’d think that Khan would have learned his lesson by now that he doesn’t have the chin to slug it out with his opponents, but I guess he hasn’t.

Collazo hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire in the past five years with his opposition, has he? Casual boxing fans probably aren’t aware of it but these are the guys that Collazo has fought in the past five years: Victor Ortiz, Alan Sanchez, Miguel Callist, Steve Upsher Chambers, Freddy Hernandez, Franklin Gonzalez and David Gogichaishvili. Collazo was beaten by Hernandez, but he was able to beat the other list of 3rd tier fighters. What this list of fighters tells me is that Collazo hardly deserves to be the big test that Khan must pass to get a fight against Mayweather.

Shouldn’t Khan have to face someone who has been fighting better opposition than the guys that Collazo has been facing? I mean, look at the guys that Collazo has fought in the past 5 years and tell me if they’re top quality opposition. They dragged Collazo out, put him in with Ortiz, who had two consecutive losses to Mayweather and Josesito Lopez, and they then had Collazo fight Ortiz. That was hardly a test for Collazo to show that he was relevant.
