Could Maidana do the impossible by beating Mayweather?

maidana755By Mike Wyatt: Finally Floyd Mayweather Jr. has announced he is to fight Marcos Maidana on May the 3rd. I for one, believe this to be a much better and exciting fight than the proposed fight against Amir Khan. The Khan fight has it’s pro’s, as he could trouble Mayweather with his hand speed and boxing skills but the overwhelming fact remains that it would probably be Khan dancing around Floyd over 12 rounds before Mayweather’s given the points decision.

I do believe however, Maidana will produce an exciting fight against Floyd if he comes out the same way he did against Broner. He needs to come out as the aggressor and keep up the work rate, trying to pin Floyd against the ropes and get some shots off, I believe the key will be trying to keep Floyd from getting into his rhythm.. Easier said than done!

Early betting odds are showing Maidana, the obvious underdog, at 8/1, well worth a punt as he always has a punchers chance with his power, undeniable work rate and heart. He has also come along really well in his last few fights and Robert Garcia has done a good job improving his overall boxing skills.

I did believe that he would come out on top against Broner but I do know that it isn’t Broner he’s fighting again, this is Floyd Mayweather, undeniably the greatest fighter on the planet at this moment in time, he will not panic the way Broner did when he got hit and he has got the experience and skill to get himself out of the situations that Broner often found himself in.

I’ve been a fan of Maidana for years and really think he deserves this fight after his last few performances, unlike Khan, who after his last four fights, has not proven enough to fight the P4P king, I think the best fight for Khan to pursue would be against Broner. It’s a big name to add to his resume and Khan does have the hand speed and boxing skills to beat him, as long as he doesn’t get tagged with one of Broner’s big punches.
Call me crazy, but I have a gut feeling that Maidana vs Mayweather will be an explosive fight that may even see a huge upset. I am not naive enough to realize that Floyd is the best in the business and although he may get tagged in the early rounds with Maidana coming at him, he will get out of it, wear him down and ultimately out box him. All this said, I am predicting that Floyd may, just may have his first taste of the canvas for a long time on May 3rd.

The question is can Maidana do it and if he does manage to pull of the unimaginable, the question that has never really been asked is where would Floyd go from there? Would he carry on? I wouldn’t imagine him retiring on a loss but that aura of being unbeatable would be shattered. I imagine that Floyd will win the fight down to experience, his defence and superior boxing skills but the first few rounds will be very interesting and in boxing we know that anything can happen. This is a fight I’m looking forward to massively.
Only a few months to wait!
