The Money Problem

floyd773By Duke Pahulu: The rumor of a potential clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Amir Khan is getting out of hand. Since coming back from retirement, Floyd has fought fighters coming off really good wins. Amir Khan coming off the deck to beat a washed-up lightweight doesn’t equal good win.

I know a Khan fight would bring big numbers in the UK but he doesn’t deserve the fight. Khan’s camp has stated they are preparing for Alexander which should squash the Floyd rumor. If Khan does indeed take on Devon Alexander and wins, he would then be deserving of a Floyd fight in May.

Golden Boy should put Canelo on the undercard to satisfy the Mexican viewers but I wouldn’t mind the main event if Khan gets a W from Alexander. But what irks me is why the rumor of was made in the first place. After Canelo, the only strong b-side Golden Boy has around 147 and 154 is Amir Khan. Golden Boy did have a working relationship with Miguel Cotto but Cotto went back to Top Rank. Freddie Roach stated that Cotto wants a Floyd rematch.

If that is true, why did Cotto make the move to Top Rank knowing full well Floyd has never fought a Top Rank fighter since leaving the promotion in 2006? Before Cotto’s return to Top Rank, I always thought Cotto would have been the best follow up after Canelo for Floyd. I know Cotto was on a two fight skid but Cotto is still a big name and if given a credible but beatable foe for a rebound, he would be in line for the blockbuster Showtime and Golden Boy wants again.

I believe Golden Boy blew it with Cotto by allowing the Trout fight. Cotto fighting another counter-puncher after Floyd was a bad move. They should have given Cotto a tune-up just like Top Rank did with Michael Jennings after the Margarito loss. Because of the massive success of the Canelo fight, the pressure is on to repeat the feat in Floyd next fight.

Half of the problem is that Golden Boy doesn’t have the names to make such numbers. And I feel that Floyd isn’t going higher than junior middle to get those numbers so Hopkins and Quillin are out the picture. The other half is that Floyd doesn’t do business with Top Rank and they have Miguel Cotto, Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao. Either Showtime convinces Floyd to break bread with Top Rank or hope that Amir Khan gets pass Devon Alexander to get a big fight in May. My bet is Danny Garcia gets the nod for May and they build a Mexican heavy undercard.
