garcia5645By Eric Thomas: According to Steve Kim, the huge fight between WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) and WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) could end up on the September 14th undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If so, this will make this PPV card well worth the $64.95 asking price, and it could help boost the PPV numbers. You have to assume that the Garcia-Matthysse fight would be the co-feature bout on the card, unless Golden Boy has something even bigger than that they’re keeping under wraps. I doubt it.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer hasn’t been able to focus on the negotiations between Garcia and Matthysse with all of his attention because he’s been tied down with the 11-city promotional tour for the Mayweather-Canelo fight card, but now that the tour is over with, Schaefer can focus on getting the Garcia vs. Matthysse fight done.

It’ll be a good fight because both guys can punch, and it’s likely to end with a knockout. Matthysse should arguably be still undefeated because his only losses were to Devon Alexander and Zab Judah, and he appeared to win those fights. To be sure, you get a few people that still believe that Matthysse deserved to lose both of those fights, but those people appear to be in the minority.

If you turn down the volume while watching those fights, it seems pretty clear that Matthysse dominated the action and clearly won both fights. Matthysse learned a lesson from those defeats. He learned that he can’t let fights go to a decision when he’s fighting in another fighters’ hometown, and since then he’d done a great job of knocking out every opponent since the Alexander fight.

There’s been a lot of talk about Danny Garcia potentially dodging the Matthysse fight in order to take on the aging Judah once again, but that appears to be just a rumor. Garcia reportedly does want to fight Matthysse and that looks like the next fight for Garcia unless the two fighters hit an impasse in their negotiations.
