It won’t be easy for Mayweather to beat Canelo

may332By Salvador Arteaga: This is a rebuttal to the author of “How Mayweather beats Alvarez easily”, is. I want to tell him he is absurdly wrong. If Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) does win, it won’t be easily. He is unjustly discrediting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), and is categorizing him as a second rate boxer. Canelo is currently an undefeated champion, and is on the verge of defeating the proclaimed best pound-for-pound boxer.

Mayweather is rightfully great, and deserves praise for his accomplishments, but Canelo deserves the same respect. His record is similar to that of Mayweather’s and he’s done so by beating some of the same opponents Mayweather did. If you discredit Canelo’s record then you discredit Mayweather’s by default. The reason I state the Mayweather-Canelo match will be closer than many predict is purely based on skill and past performance. Mayweather is a great boxer, but his defense is not impenetrable. He’s lost rounds to boxers in the past and will lose rounds against Canelo. The most successful being Luis Castillo, De La Hoya, and Cotto.

Canelo is currently faster and stronger than those that faced Mayweather at their respective times. He is a smart, tactical fighter and possesses the necessary speed to compete against Mayweather. The element which makes Mayweather’s defense so effective is his speed. If a Mayweather clone existed who lacked speed, his defense would be ineffective and extremely penetrable. Mayweather’s opponents have all possessed impressive offensive arsenals, but find them to be less effective against Mayweather’s defense, his speed is what makes that defense so effective.

The most recent notable opponent to have competed against Mayweather with limited effectiveness is Cotto. Cotto’s speed and power was effective with limited success. Canelo possesses greater speed and power than Cotto and it’s evident against Trout, a boxer both have faced. Analyze the quickness and power of both, and one will find Canelo is superior. I’m not stating Canelo will find sucess simply on speed and power, but it gives him a fighting chance, one the undisclosed author of the aforementioned article did not give. Canelo must strategize smartly against Mayweather and use his god giving gifts effectively to defeat him. He must place smart and effective pressure, and avoid unnecessary punching.

Canelo is a great body puncher, he must attack the body heavily to both slow and land effectively. Everyone seems to want to attack the head exclusively, but they tend to forget a bigger target exists in the body. Canelo will the fiercest competition Mayweather has faced in many years, and can ultimately dethrone Mayweather if he fights intelligently.
