Ricky Burns needs to avoid Terrence Crawford if he wants to keep his WBO strap

crawford4543By Scott Gilfoid: I think it’s safe to say that Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn won’t be ringing the highly talented unbeaten lightweight contender #4 IBF, Terrence Crawford (21-0, 16 KO’s) to try and set up a fight between him and Hearn’s fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2, 11 KO’s) anytime soon.

In fact, that’s a fight I don’t see Hearn EVER making because it’s so clear that Burns would be in deep, deep trouble if Hearn made that fight. The unbeaten American Crawford, 25, looked like gold last night in stopping a very hard hitting Alejandro Sanabria (34-2-1, 25 KO’s) in the 6th round at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

It was especially impressive because Sanabria is a guy that had been knocking out everyone with his big power, yet Crawford was able to avoid most of his big power shots en route to giving him a real thrashing in front of a packed American Airlines Center. The fight was like watching a skilled surgeon operating on patient in need of help.

Crawford is the real deal, and I think he would do a real number on Ricky Burns if that fight were to be made. It’s too bad we likely will never get a chance to see that fight because I’d love to see how Burns does against a fighter in the class of Crawford.

We saw Burns look terrible last month in stopping Jose Gonzalez in the 9th round. Had Gonzalez not gassed out and suffered an injury to his left wrist, I think he would have won that fight no problem.

Heck, why am I even mentioning Crawford for Burns? Burns already had opportunities to fight Adrien Broner but chose twice not to take that fight.

If Burns isn’t willing to get in the ring with Broner, then I can’t see him being open to fight a talent like Crawford because he could be the best in the division right now. I think he might even be better than Broner, and that says a lot because Broner is a tremendous talent.

Crawford, 5’8”, has a 73” reach and that would give him a 3” reach advantage over Burns if that fight were to happen. That’s the same reach advantage that Jose Gonzalez had over Burns last May, and we saw how Gonzalez was able to stand on the outside and calmly pick Burns apart in that fight. Crawford would do the same but without gassing out and without suffering a hand injury.
