Hearn: Golovkin vs. Froch woud be epic at 168

golovkin453By Scott Gilfoid: It seems that Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s), may be getting some ideas about a possible fight between the 6’1” Froch and the 5’10” IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) after watching Golovkin make short work of Britain’s Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) last night in blasting him to smithereens in 3rd rounds at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Hearn said this on his twitter after watching the talented Golovkin smash up Macklin: “GGG is a beast. Golovkin v @Carl Froch at 168 would be epic @HBOBoxing.”

You notice how Hearn included HBO with the tweet. It looks like Hearn is trying to plant some seeds in the minds of the top executives at HBO about trying to make this fight happen. I think it would be a good one, but not for Froch though.

There wouldn’t be any advantage for Froch other than his height and reach. Froch doesn’t rehydrate a lot for his fights at 168, so Golovkin wouldn’t be facing a heavy guy weighing in the 190s or anything like he would against some of the other super middleweights.

In looking at how Froch had problems with Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler, I think Golovkin would obliterate Froch with monstrous shots. Froch wouldn’t be able to keep Golovkin off of him with that weak jab that he used to keep Kessler on the outside last month. Golovkin wouldn’t just stand there looking clueless like Kessler was. He’d block or go under the jab and tear Froch apart on the inside the same way that Ward did in their fight in 2011.

Golovkin would take a fight against Froch if he had the chance to get that fight. It’s probably the best fight that Golovkin will get in the next year so. I don’t think Ward will say yes to a fight against Golovkin, at least it doesn’t sound like he wants to fight him right now.

Froch would be really up against it if he were to face a talent like Golovkin. I could see Froch reduced to jelly on the canvas after getting hit with an especially hard body punch from Golovkin. We’re talking Golovkin vs. Macklin 2 type of a fight.
