Trout: If Canelo sneezes the Alamodome crowd will cheer him on April 20th

canelo76By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) fully expects the large crowd at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas to be fully behind their hero WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) in their fight on April 20th.

Thus far, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions is reporting that 35,000 tickets has already been sold for this unification bout and by the night of the fight 10 days from now, we could see more than 40,000 boxing fans in attendance with likely 99% of them Canelo fans.

Trout said this as his telephone conference with Canelo, as quoted by Dan Rafael: “If Canelo sneezes the crowd will cheer for him. If the judges want to jerk me, that’s between them and God.”

If Canelo wins a controversial decision that the boxing world doesn’t agree with then he might as well have a loss on his record because fighters with controversial wins aren’t given full credit from boxing fans and the stink from their wins tends to follow them around until they finally decide to make it right by fighting the guy again.

Unfortunately that’s becoming a rare thing nowadays due to the fighters being controlled by their promoters, who are happy to get any kind of win and don’t want to take chances with their fighters when they see they’ve won a controversial decision.

I wish I could say that Golden Boy Promotions would steer Canelo into giving Trout a rematch if the fight ended up with Canelo winning a controversial decision, but I can’t see that happening. I think Golden Boy would block a rematch and push Canelo forward no matter how controversial the decision was to try and get him in with Floyd Mayweather Jr. so that they can have him fighting Mayweather Jr. with an unbeaten record.

The crowd is going to be cheering each punch that Canelo throws and I don’t think they’ll differentiate between missed punches and those that land. They’re just going to be cheering him and that in turn could affect the judges into thinking Canelo is doing better than he actually is. As a result, Trout may have to give Canelo a real beating in order to get a victory over him on April 20th in San Antonio.
