Trout deserves a rematch with Canelo

003 Alvarez vs Trout IMG_3726(Photo credit: Tom Casino/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Given how controversial tonight’s 12 round unanimous decision win was for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s), I think it’s best that there be an immediate rematch in a neutral venue outside of Texas with a completely new set of judges this time.

Tonight’s result is too controversial and you can see that by reading the comment section and the internet forums. Canelo can’t move on from this fight without being followed by his tainted win, which will follow him like the scent of a smelly skunk. Boxing fans won’t forget Canelo’s bogus win and he’ll be seen by a lot of fans a fake if he doesn’t fight Trout again to clear up the controversy.

Boxing fan is split between who they felt won the fight. We know the judges that the World Boxing Council picked out for the fight scored the fight 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109, Al Bernstein of Showtime had the fight scored a draw and many boxing fans feel that Canelo didn’t do enough to deserve the win.

Canelo’s work rate was poor, he failed to fight hard in all 12 rounds. The crowd may have had a huge part in Canelo getting this win because when Canelo would throw a punch at a clip of one punch every 30-45 seconds, the Alamodome crowd would go berserk as if Canelo had scored a knockout, but in between those long gaps, Trout was constantly landing jabs and power shots in dominating the rounds.

I know some boxing fans probably are predisposed to give Canelo the fight because they naturally like him much more than Trout but if you look at the fight objectively without bias, Trout won 10 rounds to 2. I rechecked my scoring and I had the fight scored 10 rounds to 1 with 1 round even. The even round came in the 7th when Canelo scored a flash knockdown at the start of the round, but was then took a pounding from Trout for the remainder of the round. The knockdown occurred so early in the round that Trout was able to come back and dominate the action to make it an even round on my scorecard.
