By Eric Thomas: #1 IBF super middleweight contender Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) will be taking a big risk tomorrow night in facing the hard hitting journeyman Darnell Boone (19-20-3, 8 KO’s) in a 10 round bout at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Stevenson, 35, weighed in on Thursday, coming in at 171.8 pounds. Boone, 33, came in a little lighter at 170.8 lbs.

Stevenson has to win this fight in order to move forward to a much bigger fight against Chad Dawson in May or possibly later depending on whether Stevenson suffers any injuries in the Boone fight.

Three years ago, Stevenson faced Boone in April 2010 in a fight that Stevenson was supposed to easily win. However, Boone clipped Stevenson with a nice right hand at the same time that Stevenson was throwing a big left hand. Boone’s shot got there first and knocked Stevenson down.

Stevenson got up but the referee stopped the fight immediately. Stevenson’s fans believe the referee John Gradowski stopped the fight too quickly, and that he should have let Stevenson try to survive the round.

In watching the fight over on replay, I think that might have been a bad idea because Stevenson looked shaken up, and Boone wasn’t tired in the least. He would have hit him just as hard with another right hand once the action resumed, and it would have taken Stevenson a miracle to survive the round.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Stevenson decides to fight Boone tomorrow night. If it’s like one of Stevenson’s typical fights, he’ll come out fast with no regard or respect for Boone and just start swinging for the fences. Boone is hoping that’s how he fights because he does well against those types of fighters. The guys that Boone struggles with are fighters that box him and stay away from his right hand.
