stevensontBy Scott Gilfoid: #1 IBF super middleweight contender Adonis Stevenson (19-1, 16 KO’s) will be attempting to avenge his loss to journeyman Darnell Boone (19-20-3, 8 KO’s) this Friday night in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

It’s been three years since Boone pulled off a huge upset by knocking out the southpaw Stevenson in the 2nd round in April 2010. Like in a lot of his fights involving him and over-matched opponents, Stevenson showed Boone zero respect and was just looking to mow him down.

However, Stevenson got caught with a big right hand from Boone while in the process of trying to throw a big left of his own. The punch from Boone got there first and put Stevenson down on the canvas.

Stevenson got back to his feet, but he was staggering around like Tim Bradley was last Saturday, except in this case the referee made a wise decision in halting the fight.

Stevenson has to win this time against Boone if he wants to move forward to a possible fight against Chad Dawson in May. Stevenson was hoping to get a fight with IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch, but it’s painfully obvious that he would have to wait ages to get a crack at the IBF, and by the time he does whoever the champion is will likely vacate the strap.

If Mikkel Kessler beats Froch on May 25th, he won’t bother defending the IBF title against Stevenson. He’ll vacate that belt almost immediately. You’ve got to feel sorry for Stevenson because the International Boxing Federation should have stripped Froch and given the strap to Stevenson already or at least once it becomes clear that Froch or Kessler aren’t going to defend the strap against Stevenson next.

Boone isn’t a pushover by means, and if Stevenson comes out swinging for the fences like he did last time, we could see Boone destroy him again. Boone has an excellent hand and he thrives on facing guys that stand directly in front of him the way that Stevenson does. What makes it even better for Boone is that Stevenson is a southpaw and is easy to hit with right hands. If you let Boone hit you with right hands, he’s going to hurt you.
