prescott3357By Dan Ambrose: Light welterweight contender Victor Cayo (31-3, 22 KO’s) will be facing the hard hitting Colombian Breidis Prescott (26-4, 20 KO’s) next month on March 8th on ESPN2, according to promoter Sampson Lewkowicz. Both Cayo and Prescott have seen their stock drop in the past few years in losing important fights.

Cayo, #10 IBF, has suffered knockout losses to Marcos Maidana, Lamont Peterson and Nate Campbell. The knockout loss to 40-year-old Campbell really hurt because Campbell had been beaten in four out of his last five fights and was considered over-the-hill by a lot of boxing fans.

To lose to this version of Campbell suggests that Cayo may not stick around too much longer as a fringe contender at 140. Cayo is going to have to somehow beat the powerful Prescott if he wants to keep his position in the top tier.

Prescott is mostly known for having stopped Amir Khan in the 1st round in September 2008. Prescott wasn’t able to savor the win for very long, as he was the beaten by both Miguel Vazquez and Kevin Mitchell in 2009 in 12 round decision defeats. In 2011, Prescott made the mistake of fighting Paul McCloskey in Belfast, Northern Ireland and he ended up losing by a 12 round unanimous decision in a fight that most boxing fans had him easily winning.

Prescott didn’t take too hard of a hit for that loss because fans still saw him winning it. However, in his next fight Prescott was stopped in the 10th round by Mike Alvarado in November 2011 in a fight that he was winning. All Prescott would have had to do was box in the 10th round and he would have won the fight, but instead he kept clinching Alvarado and this enabled Alvarado to nail with a lot of uppercuts to get him out of there.

Prescott was a much better fighter at lightweight than he is at 140. He can still punch, and his jab is still very good, but he’s not nearly as dangerous at this weight compared to how he was at 135. He has stamina problems at 140, and his power doesn’t take him as far.

Prescott has won his last two fights since his loss to Alvarado, beating Joel Cassiani and Francisco Figueroa, but neither of those guys are contenders, so it wasn’t a big deal that he beat them.

If Prescott puts the power to Cayo early, he should be able to get him out of there by the 6th round if he doesn’t run out of gas. Prescott seems to be tiring earlier in his fights, and if he does that against Cayo then he may lose.
