Ward: I hope Froch doesn’t lose his mental focus if he fights Kessler close to a holiday

froch3422By Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward never did buy one of the excuses that Carl Froch made for losing to him in the Super Six tournament last year in December. Froch claimed that he lost his mental focus for the Ward fight last year, because he was in New York around Christmas time. Ward is now hoping that Froch’s upcoming fight against WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler doesn’t happen around Christmas so that Froch losses his focus again.

Ward said on his twitter “I hope Carl Froch and Kessler don’t fight around a holiday. I wouldn’t want the big man [Froch] to lose focus three days before the fight!”

Froch said this about why he lost to Ward “I lost the last fight with Andre Ward before I even stepped through the ropes, because mentally I wasn’t switched on. Physically I was drained. I was in Manhattan, sitting in New York a second time before Christmas.”

That’s one of the more bizarre excuses I’ve heard excuses about a volcano interrupting his focus, but to blame his loss on being in New York for the second time near Christmas. That one takes the whole cake.

I don’t think Froch has to worry about any holidays messing with his focus for the Kessler fight because the fight likely will take place in the first six months of 2013, so there shouldn’t be any big holidays that cause Froch to lose the fight before he even enters the ring. I haven’t heard anything about any volcanos erupting and spilling ash high into the air, so I don’t see any delays for Froch getting to the venue of the fight, wherever that is.

Ward sounds like he wants Froch to keep winning so that he can beat him soundly in a rematch if Froch will agree to fight him. The problem is the chances of Froch beating Kessler aren’t good, and even if Froch does win this fight, he’ll likely choose to fight Lucian Bute and perhaps Adonis Stevenson before a fight with Ward takes place. Can Froch beat Stevenson and Bute? I have my doubts.

Froch will be pretty beaten up after the Kessler fight win or lose, and if he has to beat Bute AND Stevenson before he gets to Ward, there’s probably not going to be too much left of Froch by the time he gets to that point. Ward might be able to beat Froch by tapping him with a few shots. In that case, we might have the excuse that Froch lost the fight before he even entered the ring again.
