Mundine vs. Geale 2: Last chance for Anthony

By Dan Ambrose: 37-year-old former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (44-4, 26 KO’s) is in a kind of last chance in his rematch against IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15 KO’s) on January 30th at the Entertainment Centre, in Sydney, Australia.

Mundine was hoping recently that he could lure Americans Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao by coming over to the United States and beating 41-year-old Bronco McKart and calling out Pacquiao and Mayweather for a fight. However, neither fighter was even slightly interested in fighting Mundine, and his fight with McKart didn’t draw well at the Palms Camino and Resort, Pearl Theater, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mundine now has to settle for going back to Australia and face Geale, who had to give up his WBA title in making this fight because the World Boxing Association ordered him to fight Gennady Golovkin, but that’s a fight that wouldn’t have brought in the same kind of money as the Geale-Mundine 2 fight.

Mundine, #7 IBF, #8 WBO, still has his skills mostly intact, and he already holds a win over Geale back in May 2009 when Mundine beat Geale by a controversial 12 round split decision. Geale has gotten better since then, while Mundine has definitely lost a step. Mundine is still very good, and I can see him winning this fight unless Geale is at this very best.

Geale chose to take the fight with Mundine rather than facing his IBF mandatory Sam Soliman. It was kind of a no-brainer for Geale because the money that he’ll be getting for the Mundine fight is roughly twice as much money as he’d make for facing Soliman.

It makes sense that Geale is following the money by opting for Mundine. Geale also wants the chance to avenge the only loss on his record by taking on the guy that beat him in Mundine.

Mundine had the opportunity recently to fight for the WBA World junior middleweight title against Austin Trout, but he reportedly turned down the fight. Perhaps it’s a good thing that he had because Trout is a good fighter and he’d have likely beaten Mundine.

If Mundine can get the win over Geale it’ll put him in the position where he can get some big money unification fights against the other middleweight champions. But a loss for Mundine will really hurt his career in a big way.
