Khan: I want to start 2013 with a big win

khan43By William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) wants to get off to a fast start in 2013 by picking up an important win in his first bout of the year in April. Khan just finished ending his two-fight losing streak with an easy over lightweight Carlos Molina in Los Angeles.

His promoters opted for an easy fight to make sure Khan would win, and it was perhaps too easy because Khan way too big, too fast and too powerful for the small 5’6” fighter.

Khan said to thesun.co.uk “I’m relieved 2012 is gone. I need to start next year with an emphatic win. 2013 could be my best year or my worst year.”

I’m sure Golden Boy will bend over backwards to make sure that 2013 is Khan’s best year by not putting him in with someone with a good chance to beat him like WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. Khan’s next fight in April could be against light welterweight Josesito Lopez. This isn’t a great fight, but it’s a good one because Lopez has a huge heart, decent power, good size and a strong will to win.

He’s not someone that will all of a sudden stop really putting out effort like Carols Molina did when he started to struggle. Lopez will fight with everything he’s got and go down swinging. It’s still unclear whether Golden Boy will go with Lopez, because I think they may choose someone weaker than him, because he would have a decent shot of beating Khan and I doubt that Golden Boy will want to see Khan beaten so soon.

There is no such thing as safe fight with Khan unless he’s being matched up against weak tier fodder. It’s not going to be interesting for boxing fans to see Khan matched against weak opposition each time he fights, because the fight fans will catch and be disgusted. Look at how Golden Boy has matched one of their top fighters WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by putting him in with smaller welterweights and even light welterweights despite the fact that he’s the WBC junior middleweight champion. So, it’s possible Golden Boy could keep matching Khan against smaller guys, knowing that casual boxing fans won’t realize what’s happen and won’t care.
