Froch: I’ll likely be facing Kessler in May or June

froch56By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) thinks he’s going to be facing WBA World super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) in a unification bout in May or June of next year. Froch, 35, seems to be assuming that former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute won’t want to fight him in a rematch in the first part of the year.

Froch also seems to be counting on the International Boxing Federation not pressing him to fight his mandatory challenger Adonis Stevenson, which the WBA has already ordered Froch to do. Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn thinks he’ll be able to maneuver around the Stevenson fight to put that fight off until later. However, it seems it’s going to be a lot later because each time Froch talks, he doesn’t mention Stevenson at all.

Froch says he’s going to fight Kessler, Andre Ward, Lucian Bute and then he doesn’t say who will be next. I don’t think the IBF is going to let Froch bypass his mandatory challenger fight after fight for an entire year. That would be making a mockery of the sport if that happens. Why even have a sanctioning body if you can steer around mandatory challengers for ages without being stripped of the title.

Froch said to Sky Sports Toe2Toe “We’re making good ground with Kessler’s team. They’re saying all the right things about wanting to fight and wanting to come over to the UK… it’s looking more likely that the fight with Kessler is definitely going to happen in May or June, it’s just where.”

Froch is dreaming if he thinks Kessler is going to come over to the UK to fight him. Kessler is going to ask for a neutral venue like he should be, and Froch will have to decide on whether he wants that are not. I honestly don’t know what Froch’s hang up is about having to get the fight in the UK.

Froch is always talking wanting to get a lot of crowd noise from his boxing fans so that his opponent is unnerved by it. What’s up with that? Doesn’t Froch think he can beat these guys based on his own talent? Does he really need an edge like that just to win?
