Froch a possibility for Kessler if he beats Magee on Saturday

Image: Froch a possibility for Kessler if he beats Magee on SaturdayBy Scott Gilfoid: If Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KO’s) can get his hands on the WBA super middleweight title by beating champion Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KO’s) on Saturday night, we could be seeing a rematch straightaway between Kessler and IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

For that to happen, both the International Boxing Federation and the WBA will have to let Kessler and Froch bypass their ordered mandatory defenses. Kessler would have to face WBA champ Andre Ward in a rematch if he can’t get approval by the WBA to skip that fight, and Froch will have to face Adonis Stevenson, his IBF mandatory.

Obviously, those are fights that Kessler and Froch would have a great chance of losing. Neither of those bouts will bring the big money that Kessler and Froch can get by facing each other, so you can bet that Froch and Kessler will be trying their hardest to get permission to skip them.

Froch wants to fight Kessler in a stadium fight in Nottingham, UK, and he thinks he can get a ton of fans to show up for that. It’s unclear whether Kessler will go along with that vision, but I think he might be up for a fight with Froch in Denmark at least.

Kessler’s promoters might also want to put him in an easy big money fight against WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham before the Froch fight. I think that ultimately will be the biggest obstacle to a Froch-Kessler 2 rematch taking place, because I see the urge being too strong for Kessler to not take that easy title milking fight against Abraham before facing Froch.

Kessler’s first problem is trying to find out how to beat Magee this Saturday night at the BOXEN, in Herning, Denmark. This is going to be a really tough fight for Kessler because Magee can punch and Kessler is getting up there in age at 33. He’s not nearly the fighter he once was many years ago, and even a fighter like Magee, who was stopped by former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute in 2010, is good enough to defeat Kessler. I like Magee’s talent and I see him beating Kessler by a possible cut stoppage or decision.
