Angulo’s stock goes down with difficult win against Silva

Unfortunately, Angulo’s problems haven’t been taken care of by Hunter because Angulo looked like the same slow, plodding fighter that he’s been in struggling to beat a little known welterweight named Jorge Silva (19-3-2, 15 KO’s) by a less than spectacular 10 round unanimous decision on the undercard of Amir Khan vs. Carlos Molina at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Angulo got the decision by the scores 97-93, 97-93, 97-93, but it was so ugly to watch. Angulo was taking punishment big time in the opening round, and I thought for a second there that Silva would score a knockout because Angulo was just too slow to block the incoming shots.

Luckily for Angulo, Silva didn’t have good stamina because he slowed down a lot after the first, but he turned it up again in the 6th and really punished Angulo in the same fashion as earlier in the fight.

Angulo’s size, strength and conditioning took over in the 2nd half of the fight against the weaker Silva, and he was able to dominate most of the later rounds. But it wasn’t impressive stuff from Angulo, and one gets a sense that if he were facing a better fighter than Silva last night that Angulo would have lost by a knockout or a decision again.

He’s just too slow to block shots, and he doesn’t throw them with enough speed. He’s terrible at cutting off the ring, and he can’t do much if his opponent moves around and eludes his plodding attacks.

I think Hunter isn’t going to be able to do much with Angulo in terms of improving him any. I think Angulo was better in the past than he showed last night, if that’s to believe.

Angulo has slowed even more and I think it’s bad for him because he’s going to take a beating when he finally gets put back in with a top fighter again. James Kirkland did a number on Angulo last year in his 6th round stoppage, and I think Kirkland would do it again if he were to fight Angulo again.
