Image: Lamont Peterson vs. Kendall Holt possible for 1/19By Dan Ambrose: A fight between IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) and former WBO light welterweight champion Kendall Holt (28-5, 16 KO’s) could take place on January 19th on the undercard of the Zab Judah vs. Danny Garcia fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to Steve Kim on his twitter. Besides this fight, WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin could be facing former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor.

Peterson, 28, defeated Amir Khan to capture the WBA and IBF light welterweight titles last December in a controversial fight in Washington, DC. The fight itself wasn’t really controversial, as it was pretty clear that Peterson had out-worked a flustered Khan.

However, the fight Khan and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions appealed the decision, pointing out that there had been a mystery man sitting at the scorers table during a portion of the fight. Peterson would later have his WBA stripped by the World Boxing Association after he tested positive for synthetic testosterone during his training for a rematch with Khan. That rematch was then cancelled and Peterson hasn’t fought since.

Holt, #4 IBF, defeated light welterweight contender Tim Coleman by a 2nd round TKO last March. Before that, Holt was beaten by Danny Garcia by a close 12 round split decision last October in by far Garcia’s toughest fight as a pro.

Holt won the WBO light welterweight title in a controversial fashion in July 2008 in a fight where he was on the verge of being knocked out in the 1st round after getting knocked down twice by WBO champion Ricardo Torres. However, Holt collided heads with Torres and this knocked Torres out and the fight was then halted with Holt being given a 1st round knockout win.

It’s strange that the fight result wasn’t overturned. Holt would later lose his title to Tim Bradley by a 12 round decision in April of 2009. Holt lost his next fight as well to Kaizer Mabuza in 2010. However, Holt has now won three out of his last four fights and has been looking good as of late.
