Size not enough to defeat Wladimir

Image: Size not enough to defeat WladimirBy John F. McKenna (McJack): For the past several years there has been much discussion insinuating that the Klitschko brothers are only where they are because of their size and the weak era in which they compete. That theory will be severely put to the test as far as size goes when undefeated Polish Heavyweight Marius Wach (27-0, 15 KO’s) clashes with WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO and The Ring heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (58-3, 51 KO’s) on November 10 at the O2 World Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

“Dr. Steelhammer” will be an overwhelming favorite to chalk up yet another win and perhaps another KO as he moves inexorably forward towards achieving fistic greatness.

There is no denying that Wach has KO power in his potent right hand and there is always the chance when two huge heavyweights start slugging it out that the favored fighter will come up short. But the skill difference between Klitschko and Wach is monumental and it is the perception of some boxing pundits that Marius was selected mainly because of his size. In fact much is being made that Wach is the first fighter Wladimir has fought who he will have to look up to during the pre fight instructions. And while Marius is undefeated, it is clear that part of the reason he was chosen as an opponent for Klitschko is his imposing size.

When watching Wach fight however he sometimes appears amateurish in his movement. The opponents Marius has fought thus far are a long way from being top tier and in some cases were not even at the 2nd tier level. Against some opponents Wach also appeared to gas out early in the contest and seemingly only prevailed because of his overwhelming size.

Marius of course exudes a self confidence that appears to be genuine. He believes he has what it takes to be the first Polish heavyweight champion of the world. In July 2011 then WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) generated a great deal of interest when he challenged “Dr. Steelhammer” for his title belts. “The Hayemaker” provided a spark that had not been seen in years. Unfortunately the spark fizzled as soon as the opening bell rang.

Boxing fans are hopeful that Wach will provide a true test for Wladimir but he presently appears to be nowhere near the level of Klitschko’s fistic prowess. Marius will find out fairly early in the contest that size alone is not what makes Wladimir the fighter he is.
