Image: Mike Tyson gets upset when asked about rape convictionBy Chris Williams: Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson appeared to lose his temper during a live television interview with TVNZ’s Breakfast programming on Tuesday when asked about his 1992 rape conviction of a former 18-year-old beauty contestant Desiree Washington.

Tyson, 46, said this as quoted by 3news.co.nz “I didn’t do the crime. I was set up. I don’t care what people say. I didn’t do that f***ing crime.”

The Breakfast program hosts were unable to bleep out Tyson’s F-word and it was heard over live television in New Zealand. There wasn’t a delay of their broadcast, and in hindsight they should have been a little more careful in the questions that were asked of Tyson. Asking him out the rape conviction was a sure fire way to upset him, because he feels he was railroaded.

Tyson plans on taking part in a motivational speaking night this November in Auckland, New Zealand.

Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado scheduled for only 10 rounds for WBO 140 lb eliminator bout

Believe it or not but the WBO light welterweight eliminator bout on October 13th between Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KO’s) and Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KO’s) is scheduled for only 10 rounds instead of the usual 12 rounds. The fight will be taking place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. According to Steve Kim, the World Boxing Organization, unlike other sanctioning bodies, has the option of scheduling eliminator bouts for 10 rounds instead of 12. It’s unclear why they’ve decided to make this one a 10 round bout instead of a 12 rounder, because the WBO often does have 12 round eliminators.

It makes one wonder whether this is being done on the behalf of Top Rank to keep their young star Brandon Rios from laboring for 12 rounds against a big slugger like Alvarado. Rios is moving up in weight from the lightweight division and he’s had problems making weight in his last two bouts.

By limiting the fight to 10 rounds instead of 12, Rios is in a better situation where he won’t have to test his stamina as much at this new weight. In theory it should be a big deal because Rios is moving up in weight to 140, but it’s possible there’s still some worry there for Top Rank. Rios is the one that they’re hoping to create a huge star out of, and he’s coming off of a fight where he looked terrible in last April in beating Richard Abril by a questionable decision.
