Image: Kessler-Magee winner has six months to fight Andre WardBy Scott Gilfoid: The winner of the December 8th fight between Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KO’s) and Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KO’s) will have to fight WBA Super World super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) within six months or they’ll be stripped by the World Boxing Association, according to Fightnews.com.

This was determined at the recent WBA convention for the sanctioning body. Kessler and Magee will be fighting for the vacant WBA super middleweight title on December 8th at the BOXEN, in Herning, Denmark. What this means is that we could see a likely scenario where the 33-year-old Kessler vacates the WBA strap after winning it and defending it possibly once in the six the next months rather than fight Ward and get whipped again.

Kessler was easily beaten by Ward in 2009 in the Super Six tournament where Ward gave Kessler a cruel boxing lesson until the fight was mercifully halted in the 11th. Kessler was never competitive in the slightest and ended up bleeding like a stuck pig from Ward’s stinging jabs.

It was marvelous performance from Ward, as he showed in that fight that he was a force to be reconned with in the Super Six tourney. Ward would later go on the sweep the tourney beating the likes of Allan Green, Arthur Abrabam and Carl Froch along the way in scooping up the Super Six trophy last December.

If Magee beats Kessler in December, then we’ll almost surely see Magee take the fight with Ward because this guy is a real trooper and it’ll give him a good opportunity to show some skills and get a good payday in the process of losing to Ward. I mean, Magee will give it his best shot but you can’t seriously give him much of a chance against a talent like Ward because he’s the best in boxing right now bar none. The only guy that would give Ward trouble is Andre Dirrell, but he’s still out of action for the time being.

Ward has a fight coming up on January 26th next year against an opponent still to be determined. It could be former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik that he ends up facing, although I kind of doubt it. There are rumors that Ward may have a bigger scalp to snatch than Pavlik’s and we’ll have to wait and see if this fight can happen. But as far as Kessler fighting Ward goes, it’s not going to happen. I see Kessler vacating the WBA strap with a good excuse. Hopefully, its another injury excuse.
