Image: Geale to be stripped by WBA if he faces Mundine instead of GolovkinBy Scott Gilfoid: It looks like WBA Super World middleweight champion Daniel Geale (28-1, 15 KO’s) will soon have to vacate his WBA title after the World Boxing Association determined at their convention that the 31-year-old Geale will have to face WBA regular middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) next instead of the fight that Geale wants to make next against fellow Australian Anthony Mundine (44-4, 26 KO’s) in Australia.

The fight against Mundine is a winnable one for Geale and would bring him a lot more money than a fight against the powerful Golovkin, which is a much more dangerous fight for Geale. It was clear that Geale would have to fight Golovkin next after Geale defeated WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm last September, but instead there’s been talk of Geale taking the fight with Mundine and then possibly Geale’s #1 IBF contender Sam Soliman after that. Soliman is Australian as well, so it makes sense from Geale’s perspective to take that fight as well BEFORE Geale fights the dangerous Golovkin. But it looks like the WBA is taking that out of Geale’s hands by leaving him with the choice of either defending his WBA title against Golovkin next or having it stripped from him. Golovkin is quickly getting known in boxing circles for being a difficult guy to fight because of his huge power.

I never expected Geale to fight Golovkin in the first place, so I wasn’t the least surprised when I heard the news of Geale looking to fight Soliman or Mundine. Golovkin is too dangerous because of his one punch power and he’s not old like 37-year-old Mundine. Golovkin would be a very hard fight for a light puncher like Geale to have to deal with because he would have to try and out-box Golovkin for 12 rounds, and taking this guys big shots for that long woud be very difficult under even the best scenario. Even if Geale could make it the full 12, he’d take a terrible beating and still likely lose badly. So it’s better that the IBF strips him of the title rather than Geale taking the Golovkin fight and getting knocked out cold. Geale would have to use his boxing for 12 rounds and I don’t that as possible against a hard hitter like Golovkin.
