Image: Hunter: Khan is going to be patient against MolinaBy William Mackay: Trainer Virgil Hunter is looking to make some changes in Amir Khan’s game against lightweight Carlos Molina (17-0, 7 KO’s) on December 15th. Hunter expects Khan to be a lot more patient in this fight than he’ been in the past, while at the same time still remaining an exciting fighter. Khan and Molina will be fighting on Showtime at the Sports Arena, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Hunter said to RingTV “Amir Khan without a doubt is a weapon in boxing…He’s embraced it [Hunter’s training]. He’s kept that child-like quality of trust. He’s very easy to train. We’ll see a more patient Amir Khan. He’ll understand when and when not to attack.”

It sounds good the way that Hunter explains it but I think Khan will be what he’s been in the past once he starts getting hit. Khan can’t be both patient and exciting at the same time, because those two are opposites of each other. Once Khan starts trying to be excited, he’ll likely get brained by one of his opponents and then we’ll probably see Hunter ushered out quickly and replaced by someone else.

I think Khan will be alright against Molina because this guys has been VERY carefully selected Khan’s promoters at Golden Boy to make sure that he’s basically weak and harmless. Molina isn’t someone that is a real threat to beating Khan by knockout. That’s not to say that he can’t if he lands something right on the button, but the odds are high that Khan will be able to get through this fight without tasting the canvas.

Hunter wants to believe that Khan fight smart and use sound decisions while in the heat of battle, but I think you can’t teach ring IQ. Khan’s decision making during the course of rounds is very questionable, as he moves around the ring seemingly without rhyme or reason. He’s got amazing hand speed and decent power, but his decision making when cut off from his trainer during rounds leave you wondering whether he can fight smart.

Molina is going to be looking to do one thing on December 15th and that’s knock Khan out with a big shot. He knows Khan has a flawed chin and he’s going to be looking to land a big one to knock him out cold.
