Image: Hearn explains why he rejected Cleverly for FrochBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn was recently given an offer by Frank Warren for Froch to fight his guy WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly in a fight that would have made Froch and Cleverly a ton of money in the UK. But instead of accepting the big money to fight Cleverly, Hearn turned the fight down and instead of putting Froch in with little known light heavyweight Yusaf Mack on November 17th in Nottingham, England.

Here’s what Hearn had to say about why he said no to the Cleverly-Froch fight in an interview at IFilm London “He seems to have a love affair with Carl Froch, who he mentions in every other sentence. They made us an offer for Carl Froch vs. Nathan Cleverly. They can make us an offer but Carl Froch is staying at super middleweight and defending his IBF world title [against Mack]. There’s no catchweight offer within the deal. It was for the WBO light heavyweight title. Can it happen? Carl Froch-Nathan Cleverly is a big fight. Carl Froch walks around at 12 stone 3, 12 stone 4. It’s very difficult for him to fight a guy that’s going to be perhaps 180 or 190 pounds on the night. He knows because of our obligations to Lucian Bute, and because of our weight that the fight will never happen. He’s living in a different planet. He’s a dinosaur. He may know more about boxing than me but I know more about new age promoting than him. In my opinion Carl Froch is a legend. Carl Froch is a MASSIVE legend. He’ll fight anyone, look at his career.”

If Froch will fight anyone then why won’t he fight Cleverly? What’s a big deal about Froch moving up seven measly pounds? If seven pounds is too much for Froch to get a huge payday, much more than the money he’d get against Mack,, then I don’t know what to think of Froch. I think smell fear. How can massive legend be worried about seven pounds? I mean, look at the legends of the past. Do you honestly think Jack Dempsey, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and Roberto Duran would be worried about fighting someone that weighs seven pounds more than him?

If that’s Hearns’ idea of a legend than that’s pretty sad because a legend wouldn’t be worried about seven pounds, at least I don’t think a legend would be. Would a legend take a smaller payday against an easy opponent like Yusaf Mack while turning down a much bigger one against Cleverly? Some legend.
