Image: Hearn: Devon Alexander will have no choice but to fight Brook in the UK if I win purse bidsBy Scot Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is counting on being able to win a purse bid to get IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander over to the UK to fight his fighter #1 IBF mandatory challenger Kell Brook in early 2013. Hearn envisions packing a 12,000 seat stadium in England for a Brook vs. Alexander fight. However, for this to happen Hearn is going to need mighty deep pockets to beat out Alexander’s promotional company Golden Boy Promotions for the purse bid to determine where the fight will take place.

Hearn said to Sky Sports News “If I win the purse bids then Alexander has no choice but to come and fight in England or vacate the title. I know we can easily fill the 12,000 Sheffield Arena and we also have significant domestic and international TV backing.”

Hearn is talking about Sky but that’s not going to likely help him beat out Golden Boy. If they want the fight in the U.S, and I imagine they will, they’re not going to let Matchroom Sport beat them out in the purse bid.

The reason why the location of this fight is important is because Brook probably has no chance of beating Alexander in the United States if the fight is held in Saint Louis, short of knocking Alexander out. Alexander is unbeatable when fighting in Saint Louis, and a slow, stamina-plagued fighter like Kell Brook isn’t going to beat him over there.

However, if Hearn can drag Alexander over the UK and then pack the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield with 12,000 screaming pro-Brook Brits, it’s going to be awfully hard for Alexander to win a decision under those conditions. We saw what happened to Carson Jones when he gave Brook the beating of his life and still came out of there a loser last July. I imagine it would be no different if Alexander were to fight there.
