Froch: I was hoping Mack would be weakened by coming down in weight

Image: Froch: I was hoping Mack would be weakened by coming down in weightBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) unbelievably admitted that he’s hoping that his opponent light heavyweight Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) will be weight drained for their fight on November 17th in Froch’s home city at the Capital FM Arena, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom.

Froch said in an interview with Kugan Cassius at IFilm London “I was kind of hoping he [Mack] would drain himself, kind of Chad Dawson did when he fought Andre Ward, because when these light heavyweights come down to super middleweight, they are just drained and ready to fall over. But he looks like he’s pretty much there already on the weight. He can punch a big because he’s a light heavyweight, so he’s going to try and catch me early on and maybe let a barrage of shots early. I need to be cute and clever, box him at a distance before I close the distance and let some of my artillery go.”

Oh, this is so sad, Froch hoping that Mack would be weight drained for the fight. Where’s the old sense of fair play in this? It’s not exactly sporting to drag a fighter down from the light heavyweight to have him fight at your weight without even a tiny catchweight so the fighter won’t end up too weak to fight. Froch could have at least agree to fight Mack at a catchweight of 171 lbs, couldn’t he? Who cares about the International Boxing Federation strap? This is about giving boxing fans a good fight instead of an execution by picking out a fighter that fights above you and then having him drain valuable water and muscle weight to fight you at your weight.

I think Mack has a decent chance of beating Froch if he can jump on him early and land some of his big shots. As long as Mack isn’t too weight drained for this fight, he has a good chance of maybe stunning froch with a big right hand and then knocking him out cold in front of his own British fans. Froch will be trying to show off in front of his fans, and he’ll probably fight like a wild man instead of with intelligence.

Right now, Froch is still on a high from his win over former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute from last May. Froch seems to have forgotten all about the schooling that Andre Ward gave him last December and is only thinking about the Bute win. We see that with this comment that Froch said in the same interview: “People are saying I’m a living legend.”

A living legend? Oh brother, I think Froch needs another loss so he can get his head screwed on straight once again.
