Undefeated super-middleweight contender Jaime Munguia has the opportunity to earn a career defining win on Saturday night May 4th when he steps inside the squared circle to challenge the undisputed world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, live on Amazon Prime and DAZN PPV.

Many fight fans were experiencing a let down due the fact that they were hoping to see a May 4th Canelo vs Benavidez clash. However, Munguia may not be the top rated super-middleweight contender, but he’s a boxer who’s always involved in an action packed fight.

A product of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, Jaime Munguia made his pro boxing debut back in July 2013 when he scored a 2nd round TKO victory over Manuel Mora. Five years later he picked up his first world title when he defeated Sadam Ali and won the WBO junior-middleweight strap.

Munguia would go on to have five successful title defenses. Back in January 2020, Munguia moved up to middleweight and defeated Gary O’Sullivan by way of eleventh round TKO. Nine months later, Jaime Munguia defeated Tureano Johnson and won the vacant WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title.

Munguia would move up another weight class as he faced Sergiy Derevyanchenko back in June 2023. In his first fight at super-middleweight, Munguia was tested by the seasoned 37-year-old veteran.

The action began at a rapid pace in the opening round as both fighters exchanged hard power shots. Derevyanchenko landed a big right hand and he followed it up with well placed shots to the head and body of his opponent.

At the midway point of round 2, Munguia hurt Derevyanchenko with the left hook and then he proceeded to hit Derevyanchenko with a flurry of shots. Derevyanchenko was able to hurt Munguia on multiple occasions, but he suffered a costly knockdown in the 12th round when Munguia landed a solid left to the body.

The Munguia-Derevyanchenko bout became an instant fight of the year candidate. At the conclusion of 12 rounds, Munguia earned a unanimous decision with scores of 115-112, 114-113, and 114-113.

In Munguia’s second fight as a super-middleweight, he faced a man who is a recent undisputed world title challenger. On January 27, 2024, Jaime Munguia scored a total of four knockdowns as he stopped John Ryder in the ninth round.

Now the 27-year-old Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) is set to challenge the undisputed super-middleweight world champion Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs). Munguia admits that the Canelo fight is his dream fight, but in order to dethrone King Canelo, Munguia will have to be consistent when it comes to discipline.

Munguia is the epitome of the Mexican style as he throws punches in bunches. When facing a sniper like Canelo, Munguia must avoid staying in the pocket too long, because the longer he stays in the pocket, the higher the risk of being hit by the perfect Canelo countershot.

The upset minded Munguia must control the distance, utilize the jab, and go to the body. When throwing his combinations Munguia has to get in, then get out. It’s no secret that Canelo has experienced stamina issues in the past, so with that being said, Munguia needs to duplicate his normal above-average work rate.

On Saturday night, May 4th, on Cinco de Mayo weekend, it’s Mexico vs Mexico as Canelo plans on continuing his reign on the throne, but Jaime Munguia wants to end the Canelo era and make his dream become a reality.
