According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Richardson will be there to observe Chavez Jr. while he’s having his hands wrapped tonight to make sure nothing suspicious goes on with that process.

Sampson Lewkowicz, the adviser for Sergio Martinez, told Dan Rafael “His [Richardson] role will be to check the wraps and to make sure there is not another [Antonio] Margarito case. And he will also be in the corner to advise [Pablo] Sarmiento and let him know what he is seeing.”

Additionally, Richardson will be giving pointers in the corner in between rounds to both Martinez and his trainer Pablo Sarmiento to spot things that he’s seeing with Martinez and Chavez.

Richardson trains Bernard Hopkins and he’s also trained Sugar Shane Mosley.

Having Richardson as part of his team can only help Sergio Martinez, although he may not really need the help with Chavez Jr. looking frail in yesterday’s weigh-in. Martinez will probably be able to crush the weight drained Chavez Jr. even without Richardson giving him any instructions. However, it is nice that Richardson will be there to inspect Chavez Jr’s hand wraps because he’s got a keen eye for detail, and if the wraps are too thick or something is out of place, Richardson will be sure to spot it.

For boxing fans who might not remember, Richardson was the one that discovered something odd with Antonio Margarito’s hand wraps before his fight with Mosley in 2009. Illegal inserts were found by Richardson and this led to Margarito being suspended for a year.
