Image: Rigondeaux won't be fighting on Chavez Jr-Martinez undercard this SaturdayBy Chris Williams: WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (10-0, 8 KO’s) won’t be fighting this Saturday night on the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez undercard in Las Vegas, Nevada in the expensive $49.99 pay per view card on HBO.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the 31-year-old Rigondeaux’s appeal to have his injunction lifted against him was denied this past week.

This means that Rigondeaux won’t be fighting on the card against Top Rank contender Robert Marroquin (22-1, 15 KO’s). Instead of facing Rigondeaux, and likely getting knocked out, Marroquin will be fighting Alejandro Lopez (23-2, 7 KO’s) in a scheduled eight round bout. I’m not exactly interested in paying even a dime to see an unknown like Marroquin fight another unknown as part of the PPV card on HBO.

It’s unclear whether Rigondeaux goes from here. He’s going to have to work out his problems with his manager so that he can get back in the ring before the end of the year. I’d like to see Rigondeaux fight at least a recognizable top 10 contender instead of obscure guys like #15 WBA Marroquin. At this pace if Arum keeps matching Rigondeaux up against the likes of Marroquin and Teon Kennady, Rigondeaux may never get a unification bout against IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire.

Having Rigondeaux on the Chavez Jr-Martinez card would have really helped it, even with Rigondeaux in an easy fight against bottom dweller Marroquin instead of a top five quality opponent. The Chavez Jr. vs. Martinez really needed at least one world class fighter on the undercard to make up for all the mismatches that the card will have.

This is all you get for $49.99 this Saturday:

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez
Roman Martinez vs. Miguel Beltran Jr
Matthew Macklin vs. Joachim Alcine
John Jackson vs. Willie Nelson
Robert Marroquin vs. Alejandro Lopez
Mike Lee vs. Paul Harness
