Mitchell: Beating Burns will make me a household name

By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO Kevin Mitchell (33-1, 24 KO’s) actually believes that he’s going to pick up a name for himself if he beats WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (34-2, 9 KO’s) in their fight at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. Mitchell, 27, will be the visiting fighter when he ventures out in front of what will likely be 10,000 Scots on Saturday.

Mitchell said to Sky Sports News “I’ve worked like an animal…Saturday when I win it, I’ll become a household name overnight. I’ll become a superstar and that’s where I want to earn my money.”

I hate to be the one to rain on Mitchell’s parade but he’s not going to become a superstar even if he does somehow beat Burns. He’ll just become the next WBO paper champion, that’s all. Burns will hold the World Boxing Organization strap just as long as it takes for the talented American Adrien Broner to get a crack at Mitchell, and believe me when that happens, Mitchell is going to get massacred. It won’t even take Broner to be the one to unseat Mitchell. If lightweight contenders Jose Gonzalez, Sharif Bogere and Sergio Thompson face him, Mitchell is going to taste defeat.

As such, beating Burns won’t mean a thing for Mitchell other than him being the next paper title holder. If his promoter can maneuver him around dangerous guys like Broner, Bogere, Gonzalez and Thompson, then Mitchell will do alright for a while because most of the division is god awful weak. But how on earth is Mitchell going to be able to avoid those guys when they’re ranked #1, #2 and #3? Won’t it look bad if Mitchell doesn’t fight them?

Anyway, none of this really matters because Mitchell won’t likely be given a decision against Burns on Saturday and he’ll be leaving the arena the loser. Burns in turn probably won’t fight any of those guys either. Look for Burns’ next fight to be against a nice #15 bottom dweller in a title milking fight.
