Chavez Jr. believes that Martinez’s constant trash talking towards him derives out of plain fear and jealously of him for the success that he’s achieved since capturing the World Boxing Council 160 pound title last year against then champion Sebastian Zbik.

Chavez Jr. said to RingTV “I think he’s [Martinez] talking because he’s scared…He hasn’t been giving me any respect before. But if I don’t deserve to be here then why is he fighting me? I think that he started all of this talking because he’s very jealous of my stature in boxing because I’m Julio Cesar Chavez’s son.”

I think Chavez Jr. might be right about some of this. Martinez may be a little jealous because of all the positive press that Chavez Jr. has received since he picked up the WBC belt last year, as well as how easy it was for him to win the belt. Martinez had to beat Kelly Pavlik to pick up the WBC title in 2010 in a very difficult fight.

In contrast, Chavez Jr. only had to beat Zbik, a fighter that was given the WBC 160 pound title by the World Boxing Council outside of the ring. Martinez somehow feels that Chavez Jr. isn’t a legitimate champion because of the way he won the fight, as well as the fighters he’s defended his title against since he’s been the champion.

What seems to really anger Martinez about Chavez Jr. is that he feels that things were handed to Chavez Jr. rather than him having to earn it. Martinez wanted to fight Chavez Jr. when he had the WBC title in his possession, but Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum would never let Chavez Jr. fight him.

When Zbik was given the WBC title by the World Boxing Council after Martinez was stripped of the belt by the WBC, it was then that Chavez Jr. fought for the title against Zbik. Of course, this would make Martinez feel that Chavez Jr. has had things easy for him.
