Image: Chavez Jr. should have followed his father's advice of how to beat MartinezBy Eric Thomas: If you wanted the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr-Sergio Martinez 24/7 episodes on HBO, you’ll have noticed that at one point Chavez Jr’s father Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. got quite animated after watching video of one of Martinez’s fights after spotting a hole in Martinez’s defense that Chavez Jr. could exploit to his benefit.

Using one of Chavez Jr’s team to play the part of Sergio Martinez, Chavez Sr. rushed forwarded throwing fast combinations while staying low. Sr. then moved away to the side after having feigned throwing shots at the Martinez imitator. Chavez Sr. then tried to tell his son Chavez Jr. that this was the way to beat Martinez, noting that he can’t fight well while going backwards. However, Chavez Jr. seemed bored at what his father was telling him as if he already knew what to do himself.

The sad thing is if Chavez Jr. had followed his father’s instructions to the letter he would have had a very chance of winning this fight against Martinez, and even if he didn’t win, he’d have made it a lot more tough for Martinez than he did.

Chavez Sr. also tried to tell his son not to worry about trying to set his feet before he throws his shots, because he wasn’t being given the opportunity by Martinez due to his constant movement.

Chavez Sr. wanted Jr. to throw on the move so that he could at least connect with something while trying to cut off the ring. Unfortunately, Chavez Jr. didn’t try this either and ended up taking throwing few punches in the fight while absorbing a lot of head shots from Martinez.
