Image: Lebedev goes after WBA cruiserweight title against 40-year-old Guillermo Jones on 10/27By Allan Fox: WBA World interim cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev (24-1, 18 KO’s) will be facing 40-year-old WBC World cruiserweight champion Guillermo Jones (38-3-2, 30 KO’s) on October 27th at the CSKA, in Moscow, Russia.

Lebedev has faced some really old fighters in his last three fights and this bout against Jones continues that trend, as the ages of Lebedev’s last three opponents are as follows: 43, 43, 37 and now 40. That’s disappointing to say the least. Lebdev was going really well in taking on guys like Ali Ismailov, Alexander Ustinov and Marco Huck.

But after his close/controversial 12 round split decision loss to Huck in December 2010, Lebedev has been taking it easy with fights against Roy Jones Jr, 43, James Toney, 43, and Shawn Cox, 37. None of the fights were as you would guess, and the last fight against the inexperienced Cox was a total mismatch with Lebedev winning by a 2nd round knockout.

Jones, from Panama, has held the World Boxing Association cruiserweight title since 2008, but has only defended it twice in four years. How he’s been able to keep the title under those circumstances is anyone’s guess because you would naturally assume that he probably should have been stripped for not defending it enough. I’d hate to be one of the contenders ranked by the WBA and having to sit for years waiting for a shot while the champion only defends the belt twice in four years. Jones should have been defending the title at least twice a year if not three times. Jones beat Valery Brudov and Michael Marrone in his only two title defenses.

Lebedev, 32, is going to have to figure out a way to deal with the 6’4″ Jones’ height and long reach. Jones likes to throw a lot of punches but he doesn’t have much in the way of power. He makes up for his lack of power by constantly throwing shots. Lebedev has got to be able to hurt him with something because if he can’t this is going to be a really painful fight for Lebedev.
