Image: Adonis Stevenson vs. Don George on August 17th on ESPN2 Friday Night FightsBy Dan Ambrose: The previously scheduled August 11th Showtime televised fight between super middleweights Adonis Stevenson (18-1, 15 KO’s) and Don George (22-2-1, 19 KO’s) is being pushed back six days to August 17th and will be televised on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights, according to RingTV.

The Stevenson-George fight was supposed to take place on the undercard of the championship bout between IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud and Jean Pascal on 8/11. However, Pascal injured his right hand while training for the fight with Cloud and won’t be able to face him until September. Instead of waiting around all that time and missing weeks of action, Stevenson-George fight will go ahead without that card at a still to be determined location.

It’s kind of a blow for the Stevenson vs. George fight to go from Showtime to ESPN2 I can imagine. However, by having the fight on ESPN2 rather than Showtime, the Stevenson-George fight will likely get more visibility because Showtime is a premium channel in the United States and you have to pay for this channel more than for ESPN2.

Stevenson, 34, has looked really good recently knocking out guys like Noe Gonzalez in the 2nd round in his last fight, Jesus Gonzales, Aaron Pryor Jr., Shujaa El-Amin and Derek Edwards. Stevenson has knocked out his last five opponents since being stopped in the 2nd round by journeyman Darnell Boone in 2010. That loss was a mistake on Stevenson’s part by deciding to slug with a slugger. It was a gamble that Stevenson was willing to take and it cost him dearly when he was stretched by the big hitting Boone.

George, 27, has excellent power but he can be out-boxed as we saw in his last fight against Edwin Rodriguez last March. George lost a 10 round unanimous decision against the constantly moving Rodriguez.

Stevenson is the perfect opponent for George because he does really well against guys that come directly at him the way that Stevenson usually fights. The only question is whether George can handle Stevenson’s big shots. If he can, he’s going to cause Stevenson a lot of problems and we may see an upset here.
