Kessler needs to get active

Image: Kessler needs to get activeBy Allan Fox: Former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KO’s) has only fought twice in the past two years due to various injuries he’s suffered. He can back last May to defeat Allan Green by a 4th round TKO after having been out of the ring for 11 months.

Now the 33-year-old Kessler has been out of action for three months and doesn’t have a fight scheduled as of yet. It doesn’t a rocket scientist to do the math and figure that even if Kessler were to schedule a fight now it would be likely that he won’t be back in the ring until the end of the year, if that. For a fighter that’s not holding down a major title it’s disappointing to say the least. Kessler does currently hold the WBC Silver super middleweight title, but it’s hard to take that title seriously.

Kessler and IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch will likely be meeting next year if the two can come to an agreement. That’s certainly a great fight and one that boxing fans are no doubt looking forward to with great anticipation. However, just because Kessler has a good fight coming up next year it doesn’t mean that he should just sit around for the remainder of 2012 and do nothing until then.

He’s only fought once this year, and unless he schedules a second fight soon then he’ll have only fought once this year. Being that inactive is going to really hurt Kessler’s chances of beating Froch next year or any halfway decent quality fighter. Kessler was knocked down against Green, and I can’t imagine that happening had Kessler been more active.

You can’t blame him for taking time off due to injuries but you can blame him for not having a fight already scheduled now because it’s been three months already since his last fight. For a fighter that’s not holding a title he’s wasting huge portions of his career by doing nothing.
