Image: Golovkin plans on pressuring ProksaBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (23-0, 20 KO’s) has been sparring with fast light heavyweights and cruiserweights to get ready for his upcoming September 1st fight against EBU middleweight champion Gregorz Proksa (28-1, 21 KO’s) at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York.

It’s thought that Golovkin is training with them to get used to Proksa’s big power shots. As far as size goes, however, Proksa, 5’8″, is far from being anything like a light heavyweight or a cruiserweight. He’s more like a junior middleweight that can punch a little, albeit not in the same class as the Golovkin with his one-punch power.

Golovkin revealed his strategy for beating Proksa in an interview with RingTV, saying “I plan on using pressure, pressure and pressure.” It makes a lot of sense because Golovkin can’t allow Proksa to move around the ring on him all night long, landing shots from different punching angles, and hitting and running. Proksa fights a lot like former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez with his hit and run style. He likes to fight with his hands down and is what you’d call a slick fighter that can make you look bad.

If Golovkin allows Proksa to hit and move all night long he’ll have a ton of problems with him. The best way to beat a hit and run fighter like Proksa is to use the Bernard Hopkins approach by crowding him and staying on top of him the entire fight, forcing him to fight constantly at close range. Proksa can punch on the outside as we’ve seen in his wins over guys like Sebastian Sylvester and Kerry Hopes. He’s a great pot shot fighter, and he’s lethal when he can load up on his shots from at a distance.

However, Proksa doesn’t have good inside fighting skills and he’s very uncomfortable when you pressure him, which is what Hope did quite effectively in his win over Proksa earlier this year.
