Image: Froch's announcement to be delayed to name his next oppponentBy Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) won’t be making any kind of announcement today about who will be his next opponent for his November 17th title defense of his International Boxing Federation title at the Capital FM Arena, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, UK.

Froch will be delayed a week in revealing his opponent because his promoter is having a hard time finding a suitable opponent for the 35-year-old Froch to fight. Instead, Froch will make his big announcement next week on Tuesday.

It’s for the best I suppose, because if Froch was going to tell boxing fans that he’s going to be facing 34-year-old Nicolson Poulard on November 17th, I’m afraid the Nottingham Arena would be like a ghost town on that date. I don’t know of anyone that’s ever heard of that guy, and I’d hate to think that Froch came up with the decision to fight him because it’s just an awful choice.

I mean, at least pick out a guy that boxing fans have actually heard of before instead of choosing obscure guy. I can just picture what the Nottingham Arena will look like on November 17th if Froch fights Poulard. There will probably be like five or six fans, all Froch family members. You got to be thinking about boxing public when you choose to fight guys even if it’s a tune-up. I would lose a ton of respect for Froch if he makes that fight.

Mikkel Kessler and Thomas Oosthuizen have reportedly said no to the idea of fighting Froch in Nottingham on that date. I imagine Froch could probably get both of them if his promoter Eddie Hearn dumped enough cash into their laps to make them happy and agreed to either fight in a neutral venue like the United States of perhaps in their countries. Heck, Froch is always flapping his gums about how he doesn’t mind fighting in his opponents’ home towns. This would be his big chance to prove it. He’d get a great fight to pipe into the UK on Sky, and his fans would love it. Look at the alternative: Froch vs. Poulard. Oh boy, that’s going to go over real good. The Sky ratings will probably tank badly if that fight gets made. What Froch should have done was bite the bullet and have Hearn pay Andre Dirrell whatever cash needed to get him to take the fight. A Dirrell-Froch rematch would be huge all over the world and Froch, and the ratings would be off the chart.
