Carl Froch vs. Yusaf Mack on November 17th?

Image: Carl Froch vs. Yusaf Mack on November 17th?By Scott Gilfoid: RingTV is reporting that 35-year-old IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) will be fighting recent Tavoris Cloud knockout victim light heavyweight contender Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) on November 17th at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, UK.

There had been reports that Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn wanted the 32-year-old Mack for the fight, but was turned down because he had no interest in melting down from light heavyweight to make the fight happen, but it looks like Hearn must have convinced Mack to take the fight.

I’m hoping that this news is wrong, because I don’t see it as an interesting fight. Mack was knocked out by one of Froch’s recent victims Glen Johnson in the past in 2010. It’s not exactly interesting to see Froch fight a guy that was knocked out by someone Froch beat already. Froch might as well fight the guy that beat Mack by fighting a rematch with Johnson, which I don’t want to see either.

Froch has a rematch coming up early next year against former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. It looks like Hearn doesn’t want to take any chances that with Froch by putting him in with someone good that could possibly beat him. I can understand that. There’s too many landmines in the super middleweight division that Froch could be potentially tripped up by if he were to fight some of the good fighters.

Froch has already been beaten by Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward, and he was almost beaten by Jermain Taylor in 2009. Froch pulled out a knockout in the last seconds of the fight to escape from getting beaten. Froch also has a very, very questionable decision over Andre Dirrell dating back from 2009 when Froch beat Dirrell while fighting at home in Nottingham in the Super Six tournament. I happened to see the fight and had Dirrell winning by a comfortable margin of 8 rounds to 3 with 1 even.

I think Mack is a terrible opponent for Froch or a number of reason. First off, Mack isn’t even a super middleweight, which means he’ll have to boil down just to make weight for the fight. So, just going into the fight, Mack is likely going to be vulnerable due to the weight loss. But more importantly, Mack has already been exposed a number of times and was recently knocked out by Cloud in a one-sided fight. It’s not exactly appealing to see someone fight for a world title when they were knocked out just last year in failed attempt to win the IBF light heavyweight title against Cloud. Mack has fought twice since then, beating journeyman Omar Shieka and Sabou Ballougue. I never heard of the latter fighter before, but he was sporting a record of 8-5 when Mack fought him.
