Image: Roach still hasn't taught Chavez Jr. how to jab; Sergio Martinez is going to tear him to piecesBy Chris Williams: I have to say that WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) still can’t jab to save his life even after having worked with trainer Freddie Roach for the past three years. Chavez Jr. is all about plodding his way in, taking heavy artillery to the head while moving forward, and then unloading with his body shots.

It’s going to cause Chavez Jr. to get hit with a massive amount of power shots from Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) in their fight on September 15th in Las Vegas, and I think Chavez Jr’s ability to take shots is going to end in that fight. Roach hasn’t taught Chavez Jr. to set up any of his shots by jabbing to work his way in. Chavez Jr. isn’t going to be able to plod his way in like a primitive caveman fighter against a fighter like Martinez.

That’s not going to work, because Martinez is too fast on his feet and skilled at getting away from slow fighters like Chavez Jr. Martinez is going to target Chavez Jr’s head and because of his big power and fast hand speed, Martinez is going to land some monstrous shots that Chavez Jr. won’t see coming and won’t be able to take. Chavez Jr. can take the slow shots but he’s been staggered in the past when taking really big punches. The thing is the punches that Martinez nails Chavez Jr. with on September 15th are going to be so powerful that he’s going to make Chavez Jr. look mortal.

It’s too bad he dump Roach and go with someone good.
