Image: Roach gushing over how good Rigondeaux isBy Chris Williams: IBF/WBO super bantamweight champion Nonnito Donaire may not be interested in fighting WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux because he doesn’t feel that he’s an appealing fighter to get in the ring with. But the rest of the boxing world is quickly discovering the 31-year-old Cuban Rigondeaux and are becoming believers.

One person who already has is lockstep behind the Rigondeaux bandwagon is trainer Freddie Roach, who previously trained Rigondeaux for a short period of time and was incredibly impressed with the former two-time Olympic gold medalist from Cuba.

Roach told Examiner.com writer Chris Robinson “Rigondeaux is one of the best fighters I’ve ever trained technique-wise. He’s very skillful, he’s a great counter puncher, and I think those two guys [Donaire and Rigondeaux] would be a great fight…He’s [Rigongdeaux] the only fighter in the world that I’ve never hit once. I’ve never caught him. One time I was going to go to the body after a right and and he stuck his elbow in there bruised my arm for a month.”

Roach wouldn’t say who he feels would win in a fight involving Donaire and Rigondeaux other than saying whoever lands the first big shot would likely win it. I don’t see it as a fight where the first guy that lands a big one wins it unless it’s a body shot from Rigondeaux. If Donaire were to hurt Rigondeaux, it would cause the Cuban to make adjustments so that it didn’t happen again. Donaire isn’t a big enough puncher at super bantamweight to KO Rigondeaux with a single shot, and he’s too wild with his punches to finish Rigondeaux off even if he did hurt him.

If anything, Rigondeaux would likely KO Donaire if he got hurt, although I don’t see that happening. I see it as a one-sided fight with Rigondeaux taking advantage of Donaire’s bad habit of loading up with his shots all the time by nailing him with a big body shot in the solar plexus that has Donaire rolling around on the canvas slamming his fists into the canvas trying to catch his breath.

Rigondeaux is the much better fighter compared to Donaire, and he’s have so many areas to take advantage of with Donaire’s overzealous attacking style.
