Image: Olusegun-Matthysse for WBC interim 140 lb title possible for 9/8By Dan Ambrose: The September 8th card headlined by Randall Bailey vs. Devon Alexander could have as the co-feature a bout between #1 WBC 140 lb contenders Ajose Olusegun (30-0, 14 KO’s) and #4 WBC Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29 KO’s), according to RingTV. Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, is talking with Olusegun’s promoter Lou Dibella about putting this fight together. The bout will be for the WBC light welterweight interim title.

It’s kind of sad that Olusegun would even need this fight, because he was supposed to be fighting for the title already against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia. However, Garcia was allowed to bypass Olusegun and fight former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan on July 14th with Khan’s old WBA title being vacant. It would seem that Olusegun still wouldn’t need to fight Matthysse, because he should in theory be able to fight the winner of the Khan-Garcia fight. However, I guess not. But at least by facing Matthysse, Olusegun will be in the position to pick up the full WBC title outside of the ring if Khan beats Garcia, because Khan is expected to vacate the title soon after he wins it.

If Olusegun is the WBC interim champion, the World Boxing Council will likely go ahead and make him the full champion without him having to fight anyone. I say ‘might’ because you just never know what a sanctioning is going to do sometimes. It’s going to be tough on Olusegun trying to beat Matthysse, because he’s an excellent boxer, and he punches to the body with a lot of power. Olusegun has done a great job in beating guys like Ali Chebah, Colin Lynes, and Nigel Wright, but Matthysse is much more advanced than those guys are. It would be a really fight for Olusegun, and we could see him blasted out like DeMarcus Corley was.

Matthysse is coming off of a nice 5th round stoppage win over Humberto Soto last month on June 23rd. Matthysse has been beaten twice in his career against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander, but he did more than enough to deserve victories in both fights in my view.
