Image: David Price won't learn much from the Audley Harrison fightBy Scott Gilfoid: Some fighters just don’t know when to take the training wheels off and they end up wasting a their best years fighting 2nd tier journeyman type opponents over and over again. Unbeaten British heavyweight David Price (13-0, 11 KO’s) is 29-years-old and will be fighting 40-year-old Audley Harrison (28-5, 21 KO’s) on October 13th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

This is a fight that is basically a backwards move for Price, as he should be way, way past an elementary fighter like the journeyman Harrison. When you get up there in age like Price is, you’ve got to take the training wheels off and see if he can make it without special care. To me it just seems like an insanity because Price’s chin isn’t going to get any better by fighting guys like Audley Harrison, Sam Sexton and John McDermott. Those are just time wasting fights for Price, as he’s just getting older and using up the best time in his career facing lesser guys.

You have to wonder why Price’s promoter is matching him up against guys like Harrison now rather than top heavyweights like Kubrat Pulev and Denis Boytsov. Those are the fighters that Price should be fighting, not Harrison. Is Price’s promoter reluctant to match him tough? Does he know something that we the boxing fans don’t know? Has he seen Price get sparked out in training? Who knows? But it’s not a good sign that Price is still be matched against guys like Harrison at his age.

A fighter starts losing it when they reach their 30s, and Price is right on the cusp of turning 30. He’s getting old and wasting his time. He’s not young like Deontay Wilder, so more is expected of him right now. Price should be fighting the top guys. At least he should get in the ring with Bermane Stiverne to try and beat the guy that defeated him in the amateur ranks.
