Image: The WBC sanctions Khan vs. Garcia boutBy William Mackay: The WBC has decided to sanction the July 14th bout between WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia and Amir Khan instead of forcing Garcia to defend against his mandatory challenger Ajose Olusegun. It looks like the World Boxing Council has opted to go for the bigger fight and cancel the purse bid between Olusegun and Garcia.

If you’re Olusegun you got to be feeling pretty bad right now because he’s just going to be sitting and waiting for nothing. If Khan beats Garcia, it’s not as if Olusegun will be able to then take on Khan because he’s already made it clear that he intends on vacating the title immediately after and moving up to 147.

Olusegun will then likely have to face the beaten Garcia for the vacant WBC title if he’s lucky. Someone it doesn’t seem nearly as interesting seeing a bout between an unbeaten Garcia and Olusegun. Once Garcia is no longer undefeated, the fight likely won’t be near as important as it would be right now. But the worst part is that Olusegun is being bypassed his title shot by Khan, and that’s got to be a a lousy feeling.

Khan is hoping he can get his lost IBF and WBA titles back by the time he faces Garcia. He and his promoters have already appealed to the the IBF and WBA to try and have the titles stripped from the current champion Lamont Peterson and given back to Khan because of Peterson’s positive drug test for synthetic testosterone in March of this year. Khan wants the straps back simply as a status thing to make his fight against Garcia a unification bout.

It doesn’t make sense to me if Khan is just going to turn around and vacate the titles once the Garcia fight is over should he win. It’s not as if Garcia is the best fighter in the division or anything. I’d rather see Khan face WBO champion Tim Bradley after he finishes up with the Manny Pacquiao fight next month. But Khan wants to move up as soon as possible so he can try and get a money fight against Floyd Mayweather. He won’t be getting that fight anytime soon, however, because Mayweather Jr. started his 87-day jail term earlier today and will be out of commission for some time.
