Groves says he wants to fight the winner of the August 25th fight between Arthur Abraham and WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz. Groves had previously been scheduled to fight Stieglitz, but Groves injured his nose during training for the fight. Now he’s stuck with little to look forward to but domestic level rematch against Anderson.

But before he faces Anderson again, Groves wants to fight a tune-up this month or possibly next month against a likely easy opponent just to keep sharp for the Anderson fight. Provided that Groves beats the tune-up opponent and Anderson, he wants to then try and face the Abraham-Stieglitz winner. That fight, if it happens, would either occur at the very end of the year or in early 2013.

Groves, 24, hasn’t fought since stopping Paul Smith in the 2nd round in November of last year. Although it was a good win, Groves hasn’t been helped by such a long layoff that followed it. Now he’ll be lucky if he can get one halfway decent opponent in 2012. Anderson is a decent fighter but hardly a world class level opponent.

If that’s the best Groves can do for 2012, then he will not have accomplished a whole lot. The injury was something that couldn’t be helped, but Groves isn’t helping himself by holding onto the British title, because it weighs him down and forces him to fight guys that are less advanced.
