Bradley, a big name… for the future

Image: Bradley, a big name… for the futureBy Rimar Cry: Time is running out. Manny Pacquiao & Floyd Mayweather are collectively considered the best, but Tim Bradley and Canelo Alvarez are likely to be the biggest stars of the future: both currently undefeated, skilful and resilient. They’re clearly better than their contemporaries both in terms of ability & appeal.

There’s little debate that Pacquiao at his best beats Tim Bradley every time, but maybe he’s too past his prime? Age makes a very big difference, often very suddenly, and separating myth from reality can be difficult.

For the fans it’s hard to imagine an 8 division champion ever succumbing to one of the young pretenders, while the critics salivate, so eager to see Pacquiao dethroned. It’s not that they route for Bradley, more that they side against Pacquiao.

So, the question is can Bradley cause an upset?

If Pacquiao’s last couple of performances are the measure, he appears to be a diminished fighter, but I think the doubters are too quick to say he’s faded. As is often said, styles make fights; Marquez will always make Pacquiao look bad, such is Marquez’s skill rather that Pacquiao’s age. Mosley wouldn’t engage, so the fight was boring. We’ve come to expect a massive amount from Pacquiao, and if the fireworks don’t happen he’s instantly dismissed as “almost at the end”. Truthfully, with the exception of Marquez, Pacquiao has easily won his last few fights, the ones for which he’s been criticized. At 33 he’s probably got another year or two.

Bradley will come to fight and I’m sure he’ll push Pacquiao hard, but I don’t see him winning. For all his muscle bulk, he doesn’t have that much power. He’s no knockout artist, and Pacquiao can take a punch anyway. Bradley is good but I haven’t seen anything great from him, Pacquiao is a level above.

Best of luck to both of them!
